Dallas Cosmetic Dentist’s Guide to Rebuilding Your Smile

04/02/13 | Categories: Cosmetic Dentistry

Blog Dallas - brand new smileThe philosophy behind cosmetic dentistry is to improve the aesthetic appeal of your smile with little or no interference to your teeth and gum structure. However, cosmetic dentistry is only beneficial when your smile’s foundation is healthy, secure, and fully operational, otherwise your mouth’s beauty will continue to fall to oral health and functional problems. In cases where your smile is visibly marred, but not healthy enough to support cosmetic dental procedures, Dallas cosmetic dentist, Dr. Lynn, may recommend a full mouth reconstruction, or a smile makeover, to bring your smile back to life and restore its vitality.

Preparing the Foundation

Typically, the first step to a total smile overhaul is ensuring that your smile’s foundation, mainly gingival tissue (gums) and supporting jawbone, are healthy and free of infection. Gum disease, the leading cause of adult tooth loss in America, is a bacterial infection that attacks your gums and jawbone, inhibiting their ability to retain your teeth. No cosmetic procedure can last long without first ensuring that your gums are healthy enough to hold on to your teeth. Dr. Lynn will also thoroughly evaluate your jawbone structure through the use of digital X-rays and other advanced diagnostic tools to determine that your jawbone is sufficient and stable enough to support your new smile.

Calibrating Alignment

Your jaws need more than sufficient bone to operate; precise alignment helps your jaws move smoothly in their joints, evenly distributing the pressure of your bite and minimizing the strain on your jaw’s joints and muscles. Misaligned jaw joints or improper jaw development can disrupt this balance and lead to excessive damage to your jaws and teeth. Orthodontic treatment may help correct most cases of misalignment, but for severe dysfunction, corrective jaw surgery may be necessary to reestablish your bite’s alignment.

Optimizing Aesthetics

Once your smile’s foundation is strong and healthy, and your bite is perfectly aligned, Dr. Lynn will concentrate on putting the finishing touches on your perfect smile. This may include further minor orthodontic treatment to tweak the alignment of your teeth, or porcelain veneers to cover numerous cosmetic blemishes like stains, chips, and odd spaces, among many others. Upon completion of your treatment, your smile will shine and function as well as new.

Treat Gum Disease with Lasers at Your Dallas Dentist’s Office

04/02/13 | Categories: Gum Disease

Blog Dallas - What is Gum DiseaseProtecting your smile means more than simply brushing and flossing your teeth every day. Although this routine is vital, your daily hygiene is only effective when paired with professional dental care and maintenance. As part of our dedication to your continued good oral health, Dr. Lynn utilizes innovative technological advances to make your dental visits more comfortable, more effective, and less time consuming. For instance, gum disease is one of the most destructive oral health issues that can afflict your smile, but by utilizing laser technology to treat your oral condition, you can now resolve gum disease and protect your gums with little to no hassle and discomfort at your Dallas dentist’s office.

What is Gum Disease?

If you’ve ever witnessed your gums bleed when you brush your teeth, then chances are that you’ve been affected by gum disease at least once in your life. In fact, you may have it now and not realize it. The disease begins rather nonchalantly with the accumulation of bacterial dental plaque along your gum line. Some of the germs that comprise this sticky, colorless substance release toxins to irritate your gum tissues, and others can incite excessive inflammation in your gums. Your gums can separate from your teeth, creating pockets for more germs to hide, and if left unchecked, the inflammation and irritation will continue to destroy your teeth’s supporting structures, including the surrounding jawbone.

The Power of Light

Treating gum disease early increases the chances of successfully preserving your gum tissue. Traditional periodontal maintenance focuses on removing the masses of plaque, tartar, bacteria, and toxins from underneath your gum line, then allowing your gums to heal and reattach. For severe cases, this may involve surgery to thoroughly remove all traces of infection. Laser periodontal maintenance, however, can remove plaque and diseased tissue without the need for cutting by using a small amount of light energy directed through a tiny fiber. The fiber is placed between your teeth and gums to remove the diseased tissue and bacteria. Afterwards, a scaling and root planing procedure will allow Dr. Lynn to manually remove tartar from your tooth roots, then smooth the roots to prevent bacteria from gathering on their surfaces again.  Since there is no surgery required, your gums can heal naturally and more quickly, allowing you to return to your daily life sooner.

Keep Your Smile Free of Gum Disease with Dallas Laser Dentistry

Introducing Invisalign®, the Undetectable Orthodontic Treatment

03/15/13 | Categories: Invisalign Clear Braces, Patient Education
Blog Dallas - Introducing Invisalign

‎ Do you wish your teeth were straighter, but aren’t too excited about the prospect of wearing metal brackets and wires for a couple of years? You’re not alone; many older teen and adult patients wish for straighter smiles without the possible stigma of metal braces, and with Invisalign® clear braces from your Dallas dentist, you can join the ranks of those who’ve decided to improve their smiles without announcing their treatment to the world. Interested? Read on to learn more about the benefits of discreet orthodontic treatment.

Ignoring Crooked Teeth is Not an Option

The decision between crooked teeth and metal braces would be simpler if crooked teeth were only a cosmetic issue. Unfortunately, the rabbit hole goes deeper than vanity. Your teeth’s alignment is designed for optimal function and pressure displacement. To evenly disperse the up to 200 pounds of pressure that your bite can exert, your teeth must fit together in a certain pattern. Crooked teeth throw this balance out of whack and can threaten your mouth’s proper function. Also, misaligned teeth can create odd angles and spaces for harmful bacteria to accumulate, increasing your risk of developing a dental disease.

What is Invisalign?

The beauty behind Invisalign clear braces lies in its innovative approach to the process of straightening teeth. While traditional braces utilize a system of brackets connected by a wire to force your teeth into their proper position, Invisalign uses a series of clear acrylic aligners that gently guide your teeth into place. Each aligner is worn for a couple of weeks, and each aligner’s successor is designed to move your teeth a little more towards their goals. Because the aligners are removable, you don’t have to alter your diet or oral hygiene routine to accommodate your treatment. Simply remove your aligner while you eat or brush your teeth, and replace it when you’ve finished.

Are You Making the Most of Your Smile?

Blog Dallas: We help to improve and maintain the smile you desire Are You Making the Most of Your Smile?

‎ A picture is worth a thousand words; but it’s worth even more if the person in the picture is smiling. There’s a reason why you are asked to say cheese when taking a photo—smiling makes you more attractive! When you confidently flash your pearly whites, you display an aura of confidence and happiness that other people are naturally drawn to, which is the exact opposite reaction to a frown. If you’re embarrassed by your smile, however, then you’re less likely to show it, and the perfect picture may not be all that you’re missing out on. Dallas dentist, Dr. Lynn, explains the benefits that your smile can provide your health and quality of life, and has the tools to transform your smile into one you’ll be proud to show.

The Many Benefits of a Smile

Lighten the mood—You may have heard the expression that a smile is contagious. While it may sound like an old wives’ tale, you’d know the truth in those words if you smile often. When others see you smile, they perceive contentment, and the good feeling usually spreads to those around you, causing them to smile, too.

Improve your social interactions—A confident smile is just as appealing in a social setting as it is during your daily life. When you smile, you seem more approachable and pleasant to interact with. If you’re moping around a party, not many people will be willing to start a conversation with you, hoping to preserve their own celebratory mood. Smile more, and your social interactions can run much smoother.

Release stress—When your mind perceives that you’re happy, you smile. When you smile, your mind perceives that you’re happy. This relationship can prove especially useful when you’re feeling especially stressed about work, family, or other responsibilities. Before you freak out, take a moment to breathe in deeply and smile. Even if you’re faking it, a smile can help you calm down and negate the symptoms of anxiety, and may encourage your body to release its natural feel-good chemicals to help you relax.

Improve Your Smile with Help from Dallas Dentist

As wonderful as the human smile is, many people hide theirs for a number of reasons. Stained, chipped, and oddly spaced teeth are common concerns, and can be addressed with a relatively simple cosmetic dental procedure. If you smile is marred by infection or disease, then Dr. Lynn can consult with you to devise a treatment plan that suits your specific needs and desires. Regardless of the source of your smile embarrassment, we can help restore your smile to one you’ll be proud to show again. To schedule a dental consultation, or to learn more about improving your smile, call Lynn Dental Care at (972) 934-1400. Dallas Dentist Discusses Conniving Little Mouth Germs

02/22/13 | Categories: Gum Disease, Mouth-Body Connection
Blog Dallas - admonishing young woman

Brushing and flossing your teeth every day should come naturally, as should the knowledge that doing so helps prevent dental plaque from taking hold of your teeth and gums. However, the mechanisms that make plaque such a threat to your oral health are not as well known, and few people are aware of the resounding effects that these mechanisms can have on your overall wellbeing. Dallas dentist, Dr. Lynn, has spoken extensively about the mouth-body connection, discussing the influence that your oral health can have on your physical health. Today, we take a closer look at this connection by explaining how the gum disease germ, Porphyromonas gingivalis, tricks your immune system to survive, and why this phenomenon can drastically increase your risk for heart disease and other chronic inflammatory illnesses.

Fooling Your Immune System for Protection

Inflammation is your immune system’s defensive response to invading microbes, helping to eliminate harmful pathogens before they can affect healthy tissue cells. P. gingivalis, which contributes to plaque buildup, possesses the ability to produce an anti-inflammatory agent that allows it to dodge your natural defenses to survive. The phenomenon can contribute to the excessive inflammation of gum tissue that is indicative of gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease.

What Else Could P. Gingivalis Do?

Aside from inflammation, bleeding is also a telltale sign of gum disease’s presence. When your oral tissues are compromised, they can provide access for oral bacteria to enter the bloodstream and travel throughout your body, manipulating inflammation in other areas of the body in its struggle to survive. In some studies, the presence of P. gingivalis infection seemed to exacerbate the inflammation association with atherosclerosis, a disease that clogs your arteries and restricts your blood flow.

Maintain a Healthy Smile with Your Dallas Dentist

Maintaining your oral health can achieve more than keeping your smile pretty; it can help save your dental health as well as lessen your risks of developing potentially fatal systemic illnesses. To learn more about gum disease, or to schedule an appointment with your Dallas dentist, just call (972) 934-1400. Lynn Dental Care serves Dallas, Highland Park, Park Cities, and surrounding areas.

Keep Your Smile Bright for Your Sweetheart

Blog Dallas - Happy Couple

Did you know that a healthy, confident smile is often ranked among a person’s most attractive features? In fact, numerous surveys suggest that smiling more can even make you appear more attractive than the surly, frowning version of you. However, you may not want to flaunt your smile if you believe that it isn’t exactly looking its best. This Valentine’s Day, put your best smile forward with these tips from your Dallas dentist, Dr. Brock Lynn.

Guide to a Bright Smile

  • Some of the most common tooth stains are those that occur from the food and beverages you consume. To help minimize the effect that your meals can have on your teeth, it is important that you brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day, every day.
  • Dental plaque, the sticky substance that sticks to your teeth and gums from time to time, is more easily stainable than your tooth enamel. Brush and floss before you leave for your date to minimize your risk of embarrassing food stains later.
  • Saliva is your mouth’s natural defense against a lot of things, including bacterial plaque and food debris. Stay hydrated to facilitate a healthy saliva flow by drinking plenty of water, especially if there is alcohol involved. Consequently, try to stay away from red wine; its dark pigment is one of the most notorious tooth strainers among the food groups.
  • If you’ve ignored your dental visits for a while, then your discolored teeth may by a symptom of one or more dental diseases that have developed without your realization.
  • You should also try to avoid darkly colored fruit juices and sodas. Their acidity levels can weaken your tooth enamel and make staining that much easier.
  • Eat more vegetables, especially the crisp ones like celery. The fibrous texture acts as tiny scrub brushes that help remove minor stains from your teeth’s surfaces.

Bright and Healthy Smiles in Dallas

If stains remain on your teeth in spite of your best efforts to prevent or erase them, then ask Dr. Lynn about one of our professional tooth-whitening treatments. Dallas Dentist–From Your Mouth to Your Heart

02/08/13 | Categories: Gum Disease, Mouth-Body Connection
Blog Dallas - Guy Smilng

You probably know that your best bet for maintaining a clean mouth is to brush and floss twice a day and visit your dentist at least once every six months for professional maintenance. However, did you know that this routine may benefit much more than your teeth and gums? Increasingly more research is emerging that studies the suspected link between the state of your oral health and the development of chronic systemic diseases, including heart disease. To help underscore the importance of a clean mouth, Dallas dentist, Dr. Brock Lynn, explores the mechanism that experts believe may be responsible for the oral-systemic connection.

It’s all in the Germs

To understand how dental disease could influence your physical health, you must first understand how these dental diseases develop in the first place. The point of your daily oral hygiene routine is to control the amount of plaque that accumulates on your teeth and gums. This sticky biofilm is comprised almost entirely of oral bacteria, some of which undergo processes that are detrimental to your mouth’s components. For instance, one plaque germ consumes sugar and carbs, then converts them into acid that erodes your tooth enamel, paving the way for tooth decay. Others, however, may provide more subtle risks to your oral health, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis (the gum disease germ). When P. gingivalis is present, it manipulates your immune system, leading to excessive inflammation of your gums and reduced ability to fight off infection. The beginning stage of gum disease, called gingivitis, is usually detected by the unsightly symptoms of red, swollen, and bleeding gums.

The Oral-Systemic Connection

When infection takes hold in your mouth, the compromised soft tissues can offer a way into your bloodstream for mouth germs to travel throughout your body. In one study that sought to further understand the connection between gum disease and heart disease, researchers discovered that P. gingivalis accelerates the inflammation associated with many different forms of heart disease, including atherosclerosis (a hardening of the arteries). As an additional piece to the oral-systemic connection puzzle, the results of this study highlight the far-reaching consequences of not taking proper care of your dental health.

Excellent Dental Health in Dallas

Although more research is needed to accurately describe the cause and effect of this connection, Dr. Lynn advises keeping your mouth clean with a diligent dental hygiene routine to keep your smile brilliant and reduce the risk of heart disease. Rebuilding a Tooth to Reduce its Sensitivity

02/03/13 | Categories: News in Dentistry, Tooth Sensitivity
Blog Dallas - Double Thumbs Up

Toothaches have plagued human mouths for millennia. In fact, remains that date back as far as 7000 BC indicate that our early ancestors practiced dentistry, sometimes utilizing techniques that are still in use today. Teeth found among the remains in present-day Pakistan exhibited nearly perfect holes carved out of their centers, typical for a modern dental filling procedure that involves removing decayed tooth tissue. As our collective knowledge continues to grow in the fields of dentistry, medicine, science, and the world around us, so, too, does our desire to unlock the secrets of the issues that affect our oral health. Dallas dentist, Dr. Brock Lynn, examines how an unexpected lesson from nature may help scientists resolve one of the most common dental issues today—tooth sensitivity.

The Structure of a Tooth

Tooth sensitivity is not a disease or infection in itself. Rather, it is a common symptom shared by various maladies, including some that are not even dental related (a sinus infection, for instance). Quite often, however, the problem is a breach in your tooth’s defenses. A healthy human tooth is comprised of layers, the outermost of which is enamel (the strongest, most mineralized substance your body produces). Underneath enamel is your tooth’s main structure, called dentin. Softer than enamel, dentin also contains small holes that lead to the pulp at your tooth’s center. These holes feed sensory information to the nerves in the pulp. When enamel is compromised by damage or acid erosion, your tooth grows more sensitive as it becomes less insulated against food debris, bacteria, hot and cold temperatures, and other irritants.

Taking Lessons from Nature

The process by which organic acid weakens your enamel and saps your teeth of essential minerals is called demineralization, and is the precursor to tooth decay. While enamel cannot regrow, it can remain strong by fortifying itself with minerals (remineralization). If the rate of demineralization exceeds the rate of remineralization, your enamel can grow too weak to protect your teeth. To help combat this inequality, scientists have attempted to bathe teeth with excessively worn enamel and dentin in mineral solutions to promote remineralization. While the solutions successfully remineralized enamel, the dentin remained unhealed. Researchers Quan-Li Li, Chun Hung Chu, and their colleagues understand the need to heal enamel and dentin simultaneously, and they then turned to an unlikely source for the inspiration of their work. Li and Chu decided to mimic the special adhesive that allows mussels to adhere to a variety of surfaces. By adding their sticky ingredient to the mineral baths, the authors made it possible for the minerals to remain in contact with dentin long enough to successfully heal it along with enamel.

Until sticky mineral baths become a viable treatment for worn teeth, you can help reduce your risk of toothaches by brushing and flossing your teeth daily, as well as attending your dental checkup and exam at least once every six months. A Proactive Solution for Better Dental Health

01/23/13 | Categories: General Dentistry, Oral Hygiene
Blog Dallas - A Proactive Solution for Better Dental Health

Dental issues are more than a nuisance. If you ignore a nuisance, it typically goes away, or at least no longer bothers you. Ignore a dental infection or disease, however, and it will only spread and grow until eventually it destroys your teeth, gums, and jawbone. Even if your mouth is healthy now, it will not remain so for long if you neglect to care for it properly. To help you improve and maintain your oral health, Dallas dentist Dr. Brock Lynn outlines steps you can take to keep your mouth clean and healthy.

Steps to a Healthier Smile

  • The majority of your dental health care takes place at home. You should brush a minimum of twice daily, and floss a minimum of once daily, preferably before bedtime.
  • Not every toothbrush is the same. Like all successful projects, keeping your teeth clean and healthy requires the proper tools. Be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush with the ADA (American Dental Association) seal of approval, and replace it at least every three months (sooner if the bristles are frayed).
  • Even with soft bristles, scrubbing your teeth too harshly can damage your tooth enamel and leave your teeth vulnerable to decay, in essence defeating the purpose of brushing your teeth. Instead, rub your soft-bristled toothbrush gently across every surface of every tooth, including along your gum line to clear it of bacteria.
  • Avoid eating excessive amounts of sugar. Bacteria that comprise your dental plaque consume sugar and convert it into acid, which attacks your tooth enamel to pave the way for tooth decay.
  • As good as your daily oral hygiene routine is, it may be all for nothing without regular dental checkups and cleanings. The ADA suggests you visit your dentist at least once every six months, or sooner, if recommended.

Tooth care has advanced exponentially over the course of several millennia, and dentistry is now a common field for innovative research and technology. A large portion of dental innovation involves a greater understanding of your oral health and the issues that can afflict it. We now know that, regardless how advanced our techniques become, true oral health originates from a healthy body and a delicate balance of organic fuel that your mouth needs to operate. Proper nutrition can help keep your mouth, teeth, and gums strong and can help increase your natural defenses against tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental health issues. Dallas dentist, Dr. Brock Lynn, discusses one of these vital nutrients, which your body produces as a result to sunlight exposure.

The Sunshine Vitamin’s Effect on Your Teeth

Vitamin D is often called the “Sunshine Vitamin” because it is produced when your skin is stimulated by sunlight. One of the vitamin’s many benefits is that it facilitates your body’s absorption of calcium, which strengthens the jawbone that supports your teeth and fortifies your tooth enamel, which is made almost entirely of calcium and other minerals. Surprisingly, research has also discovered that vitamin D has the ability to produce a potent antimicrobial peptide that helps control and eliminate harmful oral bacteria. These germs, which contribute to dental plaque formation, are also the cause for many of the issues that damage your teeth and gums (i.e., tooth decay and gum disease).

Protect Your Teeth with Excellent Dental Care in Dallas

Aside from sunlight exposure, you can also increase your vitamin D intake by drinking milk, eating cheese, and consuming other dairy products. If you prefer, you can also take a vitamin D supplement to ensure you receive the recommended daily amount. To schedule a consultation with your Dallas Dentist, or learn more about healthy living and oral health, call Lynn Dental Care at (972) 934-1400. Our office is in the 75240 area. Blog Dallas: We help to improve and maintain the smile you desire Dallas Dentist Offers You a New Smile with Porcelain Veneers

As the new year finally settles into its stride, how much progress have you made achieving your resolutions? Like most people, your resolutions may involve some sort of self-improvement, such as a healthier diet or a more strict exercise regimen. If image and confidence are among the things you wish to improve, consider your smile. According to multiple surveys, many people agree that a bright and healthy smile can make you more attractive. As a dedicated dentist in Dallas, Dr. Brock Lynn has extensive experience creating masterpiece smiles for his patients, often with the help of innovative porcelain dental veneers.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

If your smile is afflicted by a number of cosmetic issues at once, then addressing all of these issues can seem like quite a daunting task. Luckily, creating your perfect smile does not have to be that complicated. A porcelain veneer is a thin wafer of dental porcelain, which is designed to blend in with your smile’s natural shape and color. After your teeth are prepared by removing a small amount of enamel, your veneers are bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth to create a straight, bright, and beautiful smile. Issues that veneers can address include, but are not limited to:

  • Moderate to severe tooth stains
  • Slightly crooked or misshapen teeth
  • Chipped teeth

Smiling is one of the simplest acts you can perform, but is also a universally understood expression that can have positive effects on your quality of life. Make your smile one to be proud of and you’ll be more likely to show it often. If you feel like your smile leaves something to be desired, and you would like to speak with Dr. Lynn about correcting it, please contact our office at (972) 934-1400. Innovative Periodontal Therapy at Your Dallas Dentist's Office

Blog Dallas - woman smiling

Over the last centuries, the field of dentistry has advanced right alongside modern technology, offering new and exciting procedures to tackle dental health issues as we learn more about them. To help facilitate our patients’ good oral health, Dallas dentist Dr. Brock Lynn utilizes state-of-the-art technology to make your treatment as comfortable and convenient as possible without sacrificing effectiveness. As part of this dedication, we introduce PerioLase Laser Periodontal Therapy, the laser treatment that makes treating and healing your gums easier and quicker than ever.

Understanding Gum Disease

To understand how lasers can treat your gums, you must first understand the onset of gum disease, and how it progresses. When plaque accumulates along your gum line, the bacteria that largely comprise the sticky substance will release toxins that can cause your gums to begin receding from your teeth. Bacterial plaque can then gather in the resulting periodontal pockets, continue to attack your gum tissue, and pave the way for gum disease. Traditionally, treating gum disease early required manually removing the plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from between your gums and teeth. When gum disease has advanced, treatment can be a bit more invasive and, traditionally, may require surgery.

Less Invasive Gum Therapy…with Lasers?

When you think about lasers, you may not think first of dental treatment. However, the science fiction like innovation is actually approved by the FDA and used to eliminate the cutting and stitching involved in traditional periodontal therapy. Laser gum therapy with the innovative PerioLase system directs the laser’s light energy through a tiny fiber, which is placed between the gums and teeth. The light energy removes diseased tissue and helps inhibit bacterial growth, allowing your gums to heal naturally and reattach to your teeth.

How Does Your Smile Serve You?

Blog Dallas : How Does Your Smile Serve You?

You don’t have to study the research to know that smiling can have a positive impact on nearly every aspect of your life. If you smile much, you may notice that people often smile with you or at least approach you with a more pleasant demeanor. If you do not smile much, you may notice that the opposite is true. Aside from improving your mood and spreading joy, however, your smile can also be used as a subtle messenger. Dallas dentist Dr. Brock Lynn explains how the intricacies of a healthy, confident smile can serve you in more ways than one.

The Smile’s Subliminal Messages

  • Plead for forgiveness/leniency—One study regarding the mysterious aspects of a smile indicates that people are more likely to show leniency to a transgressor who smiles when they’re caught. The jury is still out on the validity of this suggestion, but smiling does help generate trust.
  • Generate trust—According to another study, a genuine smile helps to send the impression that you can be trusted. People who smile often are usually considered more generous and extraverted, and smiles are often associated with sharing. If you’d like someone to trust you, try making your first move a smile.
  • Smile to relieve stress—The fact that smiling is contagious and typically lightens the mood around you can also equate to a reduced level of stress. Even forcing a smile in times of stress or anger can help ease your tension, lower your blood pressure, and calm your mind. If you’re feeling overly stressed, try smiling through it.

Protect Your Smile in Dallas

Although your smile is a versatile tool, it can only serve you if you show it often. When your oral health is not as stellar as you’d wish, you may not smile as often or as brightly as you otherwise would. Call your Dallas Dentist today at (972) 934-1400 to schedule an appointment or learn more about your smile. Is Your Breath Fresh Enough for Mistletoe? Try this Quiz

Blog Dallas: Dallas Dentist Answers: Is Gum Recession a Normal Part of Aging?

Are you ready to deck those halls with boughs of holly, and adorn strategic spots of the ceiling with traditional holiday mistletoe? Most people enjoy an extra excuse to grab a kiss from their sweetie. But what if you get caught underneath the festive plant with terrible breath? Various dental health issues, and overall health issues, as well as what you eat, can affect how your breath smells. Don’t avoid the mistletoe this year. Dr. Brock Lynn, your Dallas dentist, challenges you to a quiz on keeping your mouth fresh and ready for a holiday kiss with the object of your affection.

Questions:

Q1. True or false – Gum disease can cause bad breath.

Q2. True or false – Bad breath caused by food will not end until the food is completely digested

Q3. True or false – Halitosis is another name for bad breath.

Answers:

A1. TRUE – You’ve probably heard this time and again from your dental team, and you likely know what to do, but sometimes, busy times of the year force us to neglect our oral hygiene. Gum disease can contribute to bad breath issues, since bacteria are causing infection in your mouth. At least mild gum disease has a great prevalence in America, with approximately 80% of the American population being affected. Brush thoroughly twice a day and floss once a day, along with bi-annual cleanings and checkups with your dentist, and you may find yourself one of the lucky 20 percent that doesn’t have gum disease.

A2. TRUE – Food is a big part of celebrating during the holidays. Even if you brush your teeth and floss regularly, certain foods (garlic and onions, for example) promote bad breath. If you can’t resist food that lead to bad breath, brushing, mouthwash, eating a mint, or chewing some sugar-free gum can help, but will only mask the odors until the offending food is completely digested and eliminated from your system.

A3. TRUE – Halitosis is the clinical term for bad breath problems.

Dental Checkups in Dallas

If you have concerns about halitosis, or you’d like to arrange a holiday dental checkup, please call Lynn Dental Care (972-934-1400). Our beautiful office in the 75240 proudly serves patients from communities such as Dallas, Highland Park, Park Cities, and surrounding areas.

How Does Your Mouth Affect Your Health? Let Us Count the Ways

Blog Dallas - woman brushing her teeth

The link between your oral health and your systemic wellbeing is not a new concept. Ancient philosophers postulated on the connection, and the first people to care for the health of teeth were physicians. Modern dentistry has allowed experts to investigate this relationship closer, and research has provided ample evidence to justify the historic theories. Dallas dentist, Dr. Brock Lynn, expounds upon a few developments that significantly increase the importance of maintaining a healthy mouth.

From Your Mouth to…

…Your Heart

Oral infection and heart disease have a few things in common, chief of which is inflammation. Certain oral bacteria that contribute to dental plaque formation also incite your immune system’s inflammatory response to invading microorganisms. Bacteria cause your gums to separate from your teeth at the beginning of gum disease, but inflammation causes the damage that makes gum disease a risk to your oral health. Likewise, taking steps to prevent inflammation, such as inflammatory medications, considerably reduces your risk of developing heart disease.

…Your Lungs

Chronic respiratory infections, including pneumonia or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), are typically caused by bacteria that have been inhaled and enter the lower respiratory tract. A study published in JOP (the Journal of Periodontology) examined 200 participants aged 20-60. All participants had at least 20 natural teeth, and half of them were in the hospital for respiratory disease. The other half was healthy and had no history of respiratory illness. The findings of the study suggest poor periodontal (gum) health corresponded to a significantly increased risk of developing respiratory trouble.

…Your Brain

The subject of dental health and dementia has garnered much attention. One study conducted by Swedish researchers has shown that the ability to chew, or the lack thereof, could influence the cognitive dysfunction associated with dementia. Participants that had difficulty eating hard foods, such as an apple, showed lower cognitive effectiveness than those who could chew normally. The results did not alter when considering whether participants chewed with natural teeth or dentures.

How Moms May Unknowingly Influence Their Children’s Oral Health

Blog Dallas : How Moms May Unknowingly Influence Their Children’s Oral Health

If you never teach your child how to brush and floss, or the importance of maintaining a clean mouth, then your child’s poor oral health would be no mystery. A new study from the British Dental Health Foundation, however, suggests that mothers may negatively affect their children’s oral health without realizing it, even after caring for their child’s teeth and teaching proper hygiene techniques. Dallas dentist Dr. Brock Lynn explores the study, as well as what it could tell you about protecting your young child’s dental health.

(Dental) Knowledge is Power, Even at Home

Our early years involve the most rapid development period of our lives, and most of a child’s early learning and understanding is largely based on home and family experience. Because of this, the window for instilling good oral hygiene habits in your child is relatively small. The British dental health study analyzed medical and dental data of 224 teenagers dating back to the age of three. The results indicate that mothers who are more emotionally stable, able to effectively handle stressful situations, and who had a stronger grasp of oral health concerns equated to teenagers with better oral health throughout their childhoods than their counterparts. The authors of the study say that their results exemplify the importance of ensuring their children learn good hygiene as early as possible.

Lead by Example

The best way to show your children the value of good oral hygiene is to practice it yourself. For more information about optimizing your oral health and teaching your children to do the same, contact your Dallas dentist by calling Lynn Dental Care at (972) 934-1400. We are located in the 75240 area, serving patients from Dallas, Highland Park, Park Cities, and all surrounding communities.

Five Reasons to Choose Professional Teeth Whitening

11/22/12 | Categories: Uncategorized
Blog Dallas - Five Reasons to Choose Professional Teeth Whitening

The benefits of having whiter teeth are readily apparent to most people: your teeth look nicer, you have a brighter smile, and you’re more likely to get cast in commercials that require lots of smiling. Unfortunately many people are not yet convinced of the superiority of in-office whitening treatments. Read on to discover the top five reasons that whitening strips from the store are second best to in office whitening treatments from your Dallas dentist.

1. The Fastest Whitening Treatments are In-Office

Whereas at home whitening treatments can take weeks to reveal any noticeable results, in-office whitening treatments at Lynn dental care take as little as 45 minutes. Your teeth can become up to eight shades lighter in under an hour, a result impossible to achieve at home.

2. Your Dentist Makes Your Teeth Whiter

Because of the chemical strength of the best whitening treatments, consumers cannot simply purchase the strongest whiteners off the shelf. The most intense treatments require professional application, which is why you’ll always see better results from treatments offered by your Dallas dentist than by over the counter whitening strips and gels.

3. More Mess When You Whiten at Home

When we say the treatment will take under an hour, that includes cleanup. Imagine having no more messy gels and sticky strips to deal with. In our Dallas office, we’ll carefully apply the treatment and clean it up while you lay back and relax. When the hour is up you’ll see a bright new smile with no effort or mess to clean up.

4. At-Home Whitening is Riskier for Sensitive Teeth

Many patients looking for a whiter smile are unaware of existing dental problems that can become incredibly painful when subjected to an at-home whitening treatment. While in-office treatments apply stronger whitening chemicals, they are also preceded by a thorough dental exam that will determine the potential for irritation and reduce any negative effects of teeth whitening on sensitive teeth. In-office whitening systems also use thicker gels that are far less likely to come into contact with gums, and desensitizing agents such as potassium nitrate and fluoride.

5. Your Dallas Dentist has Access to Professional Whitening Kits

The most effective professional whitening systems are not available over the counter. To have access to the top of the line whitening products, you must schedule an in-office whitening session with your Dallas dental office. Spend an hour with us and you’ll leave with teeth that look and feel brand new.

Turn Your Whites Pearly Today

To schedule your in-office whitening treatment give our Dallas dental office a call today. You can schedule your appointment by contacting Lynn Dental Care at (972)934-1400. We gladly serve patients from Dallas and surrounding areas.

Don’t Let Worries Stress Your Teeth Out

Blog Dallas: Don’t Let Worries Stress Your Teeth Out

There are quite a few things in life that can affect your oral health. What you eat should be an obvious influence, but others include existing health conditions, current medications, and excessive levels of stress. While modest stress levels can prove beneficial by motivating and protecting us, prolonged stress elevation can prove detrimental to your health. Our stress response, or “fight-or-flight response,” was meant to keep us on high alert and ready to react in dangerous situations. When everyday concerns keep you consistently stressed, your body remains on high alert, which places you at risk for serious health complications. Your oral health, as well, suffers from excessive stress levels. Dallas dentist Dr. Brock Lynn explains how.

The Effects of Stress on Your Oral Health

The following are among the oral health conditions that excessive stress can contribute to:

  • Canker sores—Though the exact cause of canker sores remains a mystery, they often seem to appear due to stress. These small oral sores are typically harmless and do not cause permanent damage, but they can cause extreme discomfort.
  • Bruxism—The habit of grinding your teeth, called bruxism, can irreversibly damage your teeth through excessive wear. Many people tend to grind or clench their teeth in brief moments of stress, but others tend to do it constantly, sometimes because of prolonged stress. The condition is usually treated with a mouthguard to protect your teeth while you sleep at night.
  • TMJ dysfunction—Distress in your jaw joints (temporomandibular joints, or TMJs) can also stem from stress and bruxism. Tooth grinding is a natural response to tension, but the added pressure on your jaw joints and the muscles that surround them can damage your TMJs and lead to TMJ dysfunction.
  • Poor oral hygiene—A common side effect of excessive stress is depression. Sufferers of depression tend to grow lax in their hygiene, or perhaps the sources of your stress make you feel as though there is no time for trivial matters like brushing your teeth. Whatever the reason, stress can affect your oral hygiene care, greatly increasing your chances of developing oral health issues like tooth decay and gum disease.

To learn more about protecting your oral health from dangerous factors, including stress, contact your Dallas dentist by calling Lynn Dental Care at (972) 934-1400. Located in the 75240 area, we proudly serve patients from Dallas, Highland Park, Park Cities, and all surrounding communities.

Dallas Dentist Answers: Is Gum Recession a Normal Part of Aging?

11/08/12 | Categories: Gum Disease, Patient Education
Blog Dallas: Dallas Dentist Answers: Is Gum Recession a Normal Part of Aging?

Gum recession refers to the separation of your gums and teeth. The condition can often spell danger, and can be caused by a number of different oral health issues. However, it is also a natural part of the aging process. While it is normal, receding gums can still pose a threat to your oral health, and steps should be taken to protect your teeth and gums from the damage of separation. Dallas dentist Dr. Brock Lynn explains the dangers of receding gums and how you can help prevent the resulting complications.

When Gums Retreat

Gum recession and gum disease go hand in hand in a number of ways. Gum disease begins with the accumulation of bacterial plaque, which can gather on your teeth around your gumline and sometimes accumulate just underneath your gums. The bacteria in plaque release toxins that aggravate your gums, causing them to pull away and create small pockets between your gums and teeth where bacteria can collect and continue churning out acids and toxins. As the disease progresses, the infection continues down through your gums to destroy the connective tissue and supporting jawbone. Conversely, if gum recession occurs for a different reason (such as aging, irritation from acidic foods, or tooth grinding, to name a few), the pockets that are created can still harbor bacteria that can incite the onset of gum disease. This two-way street makes gum recession dangerous even when it occurs naturally.

Addressing Gum Recession

Although gum disease is one of the most destructive oral health issues to be wary of, the steps to preventing it are relatively simple. Because the disease begins with bacterial accumulation, you should focus on preventing bacteria from doing their dirty work. Brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day can help control bacterial plaque buildup, and visiting your Dallas dentist’s office at least once every six months will allow Dr. Lynn to inspect your mouth for early signs of disease. The quicker you seek treatment for gum disease, the less damage it can cause. If your gums recede and Dr. Lynn determines there is no gum disease present, he may recommend a root scaling and planing procedure to remove plaque and tartar from under your gumline and smooth the tooth roots to prevent plaque from gaining a hold. To learn more, or to speak with Dr. Lynn about your gum recession, contact your Dallas dentist by calling Lynn Dental Care at (972) 934-1400. Located in the 75240 area, we proudly serve patients from Dallas, Highland Park, Park Cities, and all surrounding communities.

When is a Toothache More Than a Toothache?

11/02/12 | Categories: General Health, Patient Education
Blog Dallas: When is a Toothache More Than a Toothache?

Your teeth are complicated objects. Their job is fairly simple; cut and grind your food and allow you to enunciate your words clearly. Yet, when your teeth are bothered or sensitive, there could be a number of different reasons, making treatment for tooth sensitivity a bit more complex. Dallas dentist Dr. Brock Lynn explains one condition under which a toothache may not be a dental trouble at all, but a common infection–sinusitis

…When It’s an Infection

If your toothache occurs at the same time as a cold that seems to get worse, or at least doesn’t seem to improve, there may be more than coincidence to blame. Your sinuses are a series of connected chambers in the nasal area of your skull through which air passes when you inhale. These chambers are lined with a soft tissue called mucosa, similar to the tissue that lines the inside of your mouth, and are susceptible to bacterial and viral infection. A sinus infection, or sinusitis, affects these hollow chambers, leading to symptoms including excessive mucus production and congestion. Another common symptom is inflammation of the sinuses, the largest of which (called the maxillary sinuses) are located above the roots of your upper teeth.

Sinuses Are Bad Neighbors

Because of their close proximity to your teeth, swollen maxillary sinuses can place pressure on your upper teeth’s roots, causing discomfort that can fool you into believing something is wrong with your teeth. Actual dental issues that cause tooth sensitivity include tooth decay, roots that are exposed due to gingivitis, or a cracked or fractured tooth that has exposed the tooth’s dentin or pulp. If your teeth are sensitive, see Dr. Lynn as soon as possible to determine whether or not a dental issue needs to be addressed. To schedule a dental consultation, contact your Dallas dentist by calling Lynn Dental Care at (972) 934-1400. A Brief History of Dentistry, with Your Dallas Dentist

10/25/12 | Categories: General Dentistry, Patient Education
Blog Dallas - A Brief History of Dentistry, with Your Dallas Dentist

Dentistry has come a long way since its humble beginnings; however, little evidence has been found to tell the whole story. Enough traces of dental work has been found to convince experts that the practice of tooth care has existed for at least 9,000 years, and the evidence that has been found points to an impressive knowledge of dentistry throughout the millennia. To honor dentistry’s achievements, Dallas dentist Dr. Lynn explores the past milestones of the dental profession.

Dentistry Through the Ages

  • The earliest form of dentistry found dates back to about 7000 BC. In a Neolithic graveyard in present-day Pakistan, archaeologists discovered several teeth with almost perfect holes carved out of their centers.
  •  In another part of the world, Slovenia, researchers discovered a human mandible (lower jaw) with an interesting surprise; one of the teeth had evidence of a dental filling procedure, as well as a vertical crack and exposed dentin. The damage would have caused intense discomfort, which the filling was likely meant to alleviate. The interesting part? The filling material consisted of beeswax.
  • The earliest known person to be referred to as a dentist was the Egyptian physician Hesy-Re, whose tomb refers to him as the greatest of all physicians, and of those who work on teeth.
  • You may be surprised to learn that Leonardo Da Vinci also contributed to the growth of dental knowledge. His artwork depicting the human anatomy included detailed artwork of the human jaw, teeth, and maxillary sinus.

Benefit from Dentistry Today

Dentistry’s long and illustrious history has led to a golden age of dentistry today, where more people can enjoy a full and healthy smile than ever before. The Oral Health Quiz from Your Dallas Dentist

10/19/12 | Categories: General Dentistry, Patient Education
Blog Dallas - The Oral Health Quiz from Your Dallas Dentist

If you’re one of our patients, then you know that brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing your teeth at least once, and attending your six-month dental checkup and cleaning are essential components to good oral health. Sometimes, however, we can forget the reasons behind our habits, which can make us less diligent in our oral health care. To help keep a healthy mouth at the forefront of your mind, your Dallas dentist, Dr. Lynn, tests your knowledge of some oral health basics.

True or False—Oral Health

A toothbrush with stiffer bristles is better for cleaning your teeth.

False—Technically, rougher bristles may seem to more easily remove debris and stains from your teeth. However, harsh bristles, as well as rough brushing, can also more easily wear away your tooth enamel, which protects your teeth from food debris and bacteria. Instead, choose a soft-bristled toothbrush that has been approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) and brush the surfaces of your teeth lightly.

Brushing immediately after every meal and snack is healthier for your teeth.

False—Keeping your teeth clean is important, but excessive tooth brushing can traumatize your teeth. When you eat, bacteria in your mouth produce acids from the sugars and carbs in your meal. These acids attack and weaken your tooth enamel. If you brush your teeth while your enamel is in this weakened state, you may end up damaging the enamel further.

If you adhere to your daily oral hygiene chores, then a routine dental visit is unnecessary.

False—Even the most diligent oral hygiene routine is not enough to prevent oral health issues alone. For instance, when plaque (a collection of oral bacteria and food debris) remains on your teeth for 48 hours, it hardens, or calcifies, into tartar. This hardened substance is insoluble and cannot be removed with your toothbrush, but rather requires the professional cleaning tools used during your routine dental cleaning. Also, your checkup will allow your dentist to spot early signs of decay and disease, improving your chance of successful treatment before damage occurs.

Covering Those Small Blemishes

A beautiful smile is the icing on the cake of a healthy mouth. However, every day use and elements of our daily diets can often leave small blemishes on even the healthiest set of teeth. Tooth stains are the most common blemishes, and can often be corrected with a professional tooth-whitening procedure. To learn more about making your smile as beautiful as it is healthy, contact your Dallas dentist by calling Lynn Dental Care at (972) 934-1400. Located in the 75240 area, we proudly serve patients from Dallas, Highland Park, Park Cities, and all surrounding communities.

Scoring

This quiz is all about you, so there are no right or wrong answers. If you weren’t pleased with your answers, however, it is important for you to know that I may have the solution you are looking for.

1.     Color: A bright, white smile is like an instant facelift. It can make your smile and face look better and healthier right away. Teeth whitening is the most common and popular kind of cosmetic dental work, but don’t let the promises of over-the-counter whitening systems fool you. While these systems are effective, dentist-prescribed systems are stronger and tend to give you faster results. I offer teeth whitening procedures in my office, and they are designed to restore brightness and life to dull smiles.

2.     Position: Gapped, crowded, stained, and chipped teeth can be corrected with porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made ceramic shells that bond directly to the existing teeth. I recommend porcelain veneers to many of my patients and for many different cases. I offer traditional veneers, as well as “no-prep” veneers, such as Lumineers, and Durathins.

3.     Cosmetic bonding and contouring can be effective solutions for sharp or jagged teeth. These cosmetic procedures are used to reshape tooth enamel to create a more visually pleasing smile.

4.     The size of teeth is a common complaint that I hear from my patients. If your teeth appear small, chances are they are covered by overgrown gum tissue. Recontouring of the gums corrects teeth that appear too large or too small. This procedure helps to reshape the gum line, giving you an evenly shaped, attractive smile.

5.     Did you know that people with bright, healthy-looking smiles tend to achieve more in almost every area of their life? It’s true! A great looking smile gives off a strong, positive first impression.

If you are ready to fall in love with your smile, please call my Dallas office. I want to give you the smile of your dreams.

A New Year’s Resolution for a Better You

01/04/11 | Categories: General Dentistry

Happy New Year! I hope 2011 is already bringing happiness and good fortune to you and your loved ones.

A new year signifies a chance to start fresh and be better than we were the year before. This is why people set new year’s resolutions. Resolutions can be anything from losing weight, to buying a new home, to graduating from school, and everything in between, but they all have one thing in common. You must stick to them to achieve them.

I am Dr. Brock Lynn of Lynn Dental Care in Dallas, and I have a challenge for you. This year, try to be the best version of yourself that you can be. While much of this challenge is based on personal and emotional areas of your life, I want you to pay close attention to your physical well being.

I encourage you to set weight goals, develop exercise plans, and eat healthy. I encourage you to stop smoking, be active for at least half an hour a day, and do anything it takes to achieve the resolutions you have set for this year, but I want to remind you of something very important. Don’t let your oral health fall by wayside.

Oral health is a huge component of overall health. Did you know that gum disease has been proven to contribute to heart disease and stroke, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, preterm birth, and Alzheimer’s disease?  Just having regular dental check-ups every six months and continuing healthy dental habits at home is the best protection against gum disease and other oral issues.

This year, I encourage you to exercise your right to a healthy and beautiful smile. If this means getting the veneers you have been contemplating for a while, I am here to help. If this means having the dental cleaning you are long overdue for, come on in!

My team and I here at Lynn Dental Care want to help you achieve your resolutions. To schedule an appointment, please contact my Dallas office.

Dallas Smile Makeovers: Perfect Imperfection

12/22/10 | Categories: Cosmetic Dentistry

About a year ago, socialite-following journalists told us that the Madonna gap (that space between the two front teeth) is back in vogue. No pun intended. Most cosmetic dentists probably winced at the news that imperfection would become chic after years of marketing the importance of a gorgeous, “perfect,” smile. I, however, didn’t blink an eye. I’ve always believed that quality cosmetic dentistry must enhance a person’s unique look. Cookie-cutter smiles have never been chic!

Have you heard the term “chicklets” used to describe porcelain veneers? It has negative connotations, insinuating that porcelain veneers are all the same – just bits of porcelain pasted on teeth.

At Lynn Dental Care, nothing could be further from the truth. We don’t do chicklets or cookies. We do sensational smiles.

Every cosmetic patient is interviewed prior to developing a treatment plan. By getting to know your preferences, what you think is beautiful, and what you want to accomplish from a smile makeover, I can better understand how to customize your treatment and the results. You might need bonding, porcelain crowns, or porcelain veneers. Bonding can be done in my office in a single visit, while crowns and veneers require a dental ceramist.

I work with esteemed dental labs that employ talented dental ceramists. Every porcelain veneer and crown I design is crafted according to exact specifications. Highly reflective dental porcelain make the restorations look natural, and various techniques, like layering, enhance their appearance. The color, shape, and unique touches are scrutinized at the lab and in my office. I will place no dental restoration before its time! I know that with every smile makeover, my patient’s appearance and my reputation are at stake.

If you’re considering a smile makeover, I want to personally invite you to come in to my Dallas cosmetic dentistry office for a consultation. We’ll discuss your goals and expectations, review before-and-after photos, and determine the best design for your new smile.

Accelerated Healing with PRP in Implant Dentistry

12/15/10 | Categories: Dental Technology, Implant Dentistry

To accelerate healing in surgical procedures, we use PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma). This technique involves using the patient’s own blood components. The risk of rejection is reduced, which improves the outcome potential of an oral surgery procedure.

At Lynn Dental Care, we can draw your blood prior to surgery, spin it in a centrifuge, and extract the platelets. The platelets are in gel form, and in the platelets’ granules, there is a growth factor. The platelet-derived growth factor is the part of your blood that improves your ability to heal. When PHP is used in surgery, blood clots form and promote regeneration of hard and soft tissue. Studies show that healing can occur two or three times faster when PRP is applied to the surgical site.

We can use PRP in soft tissue (gum surgery), bone grafting, and dental implant surgery. It is a natural and conservative technique that has been proven effective in medicine and dentistry.

Amazing Laser Dentistry Discovery

12/07/10 | Categories: Uncategorized

We hear about some of the more popular medical advancements on the news, or we read about them online or in the newspaper. What we don’t often hear about are the absolutely amazing discoveries that are being made in dental science. Sound boring? Laser dentistry could end the need for wisdom tooth extraction. If you’ve had your third molars removed, you know that the procedure is fairly invasive and can have a few days’ recovery time.

Scientists are learning that we may be able to zap wisdom teeth with a dental laser before they develop. Experiments on puppies and baby rats have been promising. Laser treatment actually prevented teeth from developing.

I’m Dr. Brock Lynn, and as a Dallas laser dentist, I’m excited about dental science. We’ve seen amazing developments in the past decade, many of which I use in my office today. For instance, instead of relying on a dental drill to prepare teeth for restorations, I use a dental laser. There’s no vibration, heat, or sound – the three primary sources of patient discomfort. In some cases, a laser can eliminate the need for dental anesthetic. I also use a dental laser to reshape gum tissue, so invasive gum surgery isn’t necessary. Dental lasers have improved dentistry by leaps and bounds, and the trend is continuing. It’s all very exciting!

If you’d like to experience contemporary dentistry for yourself, call Lynn Dental Care in Dallas to schedule your visit. We provide safe and effective laser, implant, sedation, and cosmetic dentistry, in addition to general and restorative dental care.

Lynn Dental Care Team Attends and Hosts Tekscan Seminar

12/01/10 | Categories: Dental Technology

I am Dr. Brock Lynn of Lynn Dental Care and as a family, cosmetic, restorative, and periodontal dentist, I am always looking for new ways to enhance the care I give my patients. Recently, my team and I attended a Tekscan course. I was honored to host the hands-on portion of the course right here in the Lynn Dental Care office.

Tekscan, often called T-Scan, is a system that analyzes a patient’s bite for functional discrepancies. A person’s bite can have an incredible impact on the overall look and function of their mouth. An unstable bite can cause pain, broken restorations, gum disease, tooth loss, headaches, and TMJ disorder. Dental occlusal analysis has always been a tricky area for most dentists. While we had tools to help in diagnosing malocclussion, a large part of the evaluation process was left to guesswork.

The T-scan system is an incredible technology that is sensitive enough to detect simultaneous contact, as well as measure both biting time and force. Guesswork is now a thing of the past. The T-Scan plugs right into my computer so I can easily see my patients’ balance of bite in a clear, vivid graphic. These pictures and other information are printable and valuable for documentation, patient education, and insurance claims, if needed.

I am excited to incorporate the T-Scan system into the services already available to my patients at Lynn Dental Care. For more information or to schedule a consultation, please contact my Dallas office.

Light the Night at Watters Creek

11/19/10 | Categories: Community Events

Here at Lynn Dental Care, we love being located in the Dallas area because there is always something going on to tell our patients about. With the holiday season upon us, the DFW metroplex is buzzing with the sounds and smells of holiday happenings. The Light the Night event will be at Watters Creek tomorrow (November 20) beginning at 6pm.

This event is perfect for a night full of holiday cheer with the entire family. In fact, the children will be invited to kick the night off by tossing magical “fairy dust” into the air illuminating over half-a-million LED lights adorning the center’s historic 100-year-old pecan tree. Large glowing icicle ornaments and other decorations will brighten up the area as live holiday entertainment, a holiday window décor contest, Chamberlain Performing Arts fairies, a charming lighted horse-drawn carriage parade, and Santa’s arrival take place.

Guests should check in at the reception table between Chico’s and Mi Cocina, located at 815 Market Street, for an event program, fairy dust, and a voter’s ballot. Nestle Toll House, Paciugo, and Sublime Chocolate Bar will provide complementary seasonal refreshments. For a full schedule of events and more information, please visit the event website.

The Difference Between Inlays and Onlays: Which is Best for You?

11/09/10 | Categories: Cosmetic Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry

Here at Lynn Dental Care, we try to offer convenient care for your every dental need. By having a Dallas-area office, we are conveniently located for our patients, but our real job starts once you walk through our door.

Dental inlays and onlays are often used to correct problems that patients don’t even know they have. I will put an inlay or an onlay on a tooth if over half of the tooth’s biting surface area is damaged. First, it’s important to know the difference between an inlay and an onlay. The difference is fairly simple. An inlay is used inside the cusp tips of the tooth, much like a filling. An onlay is a more substantial reconstruction, similar to an inlay, but extending out over at least one of the cusps of the tooth.

Inlays and onlays can be made of porcelain, gold, or composite resin, however I tend to use porcelain on my patients because of its extreme strength and natural-looking color. Once they are molded to fit into the needed area, these pieces are bonded to the damaged area of the tooth.

Inlays and onlays only require two appointments to complete the procedure, so the entire process is quick and will give you results that will last up to 30 years with the proper care.

During your first visit, I will remove the damaged area of the tooth and then prepare it for the inlay or onlay. To ensure proper fit and biting ability, I will make an impression of your tooth first. That impression is sent to a lab for fabrication and I will apply a temporary sealant on the tooth to protect it until your next appointment.

At the second appointment, I will remove the sealant and check the fitting of your new inlay or onlay. If everything fits properly, I will bond the inlay or onlay to your tooth with a strong resin and polish it to a smooth finish.

Although they are similar to traditional fillings, inlays and onlays can increase the strength of a tooth up to 75% because they are bonded directly to the tooth using extremely durable resin.

For more information, or to schedule an appointment, please contact my office.

Detecting Oral Cancer Early is Key

11/03/10 | Categories: Dental Technology

Here at Lynn Dental Care, we are proud to offer our patients top-notch care using the latest dental technologies.

Oral cancer is a serious and dangerous oral problem that claims about 7500 American lives each year. Symptoms of oral cancer often include reddish and/or whitish patches in the mouth, sores that fail to heal and bleed easily, lumps or thickening on the skin lining inside the mouth, chronic soreness of the throat, and difficulty chewing or swallowing. If you have any of these symptoms, immediately contact my office for an exam.

While I suggest that all of my patients do self-examinations monthly, my team and I will thoroughly screen for oral cancer each time we see you for an exam. We screen for oral cancer using a revolutionary hand-held device called the VELscope. The VELscope allows me to see any abnormalities in your oral tissue that may lead to oral cancer.

The VELscope hand piece shines a safe, blue light into the mouth. Healthy tissue glows bright green and suspicious areas appear darker. I will then check any areas of concern and discuss possible treatment options with you, if needed.

VELscope, along with a visual oral cancer examination, provides an incredibly thorough and effective screening. It allows me to detect oral cancer in the earliest, most treatable stages.

Early detection is key to beating oral cancer and improves the chance of survival to 80%. If you think you have any oral abnormalities or want to schedule an appointment, please contact my office, located in Dallas.

General Rules for Safe Sedation

10/28/10 | Categories: Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is one of our fortes here at Lynn Dental Care.  We believe sedation dentistry is a great way for our patients to have the dental work they need without the worry and anxiety that often comes along with any medical procedure.

As a sedation patient, you’ll  enter a relaxed state of consciousness, in which you are still responsive.  This allows you to rest comfortably through your entire procedure, and to have very little memory of it afterward.  Although sedation is incredibly safe, we take extra precautions and monitor our patients’ heart, blood pressure, and breathing throughout the entire procedure.

As a third-generation Dallas dentist, I take my patients’ comfort very seriously.  I promise that my team and I will work our hardest to give you the best results possible from your sedation dentistry.  As my patient, there are a few guidelines and things to know before coming in for your sedation appointment.

You will need to be accompanied to and from the office by a responsible adult that is able to help you walk and assist you in and out of your home, my office, and a car.  They will also need to stay with you at home for at least a few hours after the procedure, just in case you need assistance.  It is important to let me know if you’re taking any prescription medications before we administer your sedative.

Please follow these additional instructions:

  • No eating or drinking after midnight the night before your appointment
  • No eating or drinking the morning before your appointment
  • No sedatives of any kind, including alcohol, 24 hours before or after the appointment
  • No stimulants, including caffeine and nicotine, 24 hours before or after the appointment
  • Wear loose and comfortable clothing for your dental visit
  • Make sure you are not pregnant before undergoing sedation
  • No nursing a baby for 24 hours after the appointment
  • No driving a car or operating hazardous devices for 24 hours after the appointment
  • No walking stairs, exercising, or heavy lifting for 24 hours after the appointment
  • Do not make any important decisions (work) for 24 hours after the appointment

Please follow these instructions to ensure your well being during and after your sedation procedure.  For more information on sedation dentistry, please visit my website.  To schedule an appointment, please call my office.

Porcelain Veneers and Your Smile Makeover

10/22/10 | Categories: Cosmetic Dentistry

Are your teeth misaligned, chipped, or permanently stained? Do you notice other imperfections, like malformations or unevenness? Porcelain veneers may be the perfect solution. I’m Dr. Brock Lynn, a seasoned cosmetic dentist in Dallas, and I will work with you to design your ideal smile makeover. Studies show, people with an attractive smile are considered more intelligent, successful, and friendly. And people with a bright white smile are more likely to have successful job interviews and get hired at a better pay rate. It’s no wonder everyone wants a gorgeous smile!

At your smile makeover consultation, you and I will sit down and discuss what you’d like from your new smile, then I’ll provide a detailed blueprint for my dental lab. I often suggest porcelain veneers because they tackle so many imperfections in a single procedure. Veneers are thin, durable, and attractive restorations that can improve tooth color, shape, alignment, and overall appearance. The ceramist at my dental lab will hand make each of your veneers from high-quality porcelain that will withstand the extreme temperature fluctuations and pressure your mouth endures every day.

As a conservative dentist, I use minimally invasive procedures so that my patients can keep as much natural, healthy tooth structure as possible. But most patients need minor tooth preparation prior to the placement of veneers to achieve ideal fit and a natural look.  However, with advances in dental materials, I can offer no-preparation or minimal-preparation veneers for certain cases; they aren’t right for everyone. One no-prep veneer is DuraThins®. These ultra-thin porcelain shells are bonded directly to the tooth.  In may remove a very small amount of enamel to achieve the perfect fit, but generally, the placement of DuraThins® veneers requires no preparation.  Often, patients who have had teeth extracted before orthodontic treatment are great candidates for DuraThins®, which are designed to increase the appearance of tooth size or to enhance a narrow arch width.

Lumineers®, much like DuraThins®, is a thin version of traditional veneers.  Many times, patients who have crowns or bridgework are perfect for Lumineers® because the veneers can be placed right over existing dental work.

For all types of veneers, the placement process takes just two or three office visits, and the results can last for over 20 years. For more information on how to achieve your dream smile, please call my Dallas dental office to schedule a consultation.

What Is a Dental Laser?

10/13/10 | Categories: Periolase

The word “laser” is an acronym that stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Sounds pretty technical, and it is, but lasers are also very common. Do you listen to CDs and watch DVDs? Lasers make these devices work. When you go shopping, lasers read the barcodes on products. Lasers also measure speed, so police use them on the highway to determine which cars are going too fast. Many people use a laser printer at the office and at home these days. In addition, lasers can cut everything from tough, dense metals to many layers of fabric to soft oral tissue. In fact, lasers are used in a number of medical and dental procedures.

I’m Dr. Brock Lynn of Lynn Dental Care in Dallas. As a cosmetic and restorative dentist, I use a dental laser called Periolase. This amazing tool produces a strong, focused light for precision treatments, such as removing bacteria below the gum line (debridement) and trimming gum tissue in surgical periodontal procedures. The Periolase is known for “no-cut, no-sew” periodontal surgery. Because the laser seals soft tissue, no stitches are necessary, bleeding is minimal or none, and most people experience little to no recovery time. In the past, gum surgery was an invasive and painful experience. With Periolase, it’s precise, quick, and minimally invasive.

If you have gum disease, know that you need periodontal surgery for periodontitis, or would like cosmetic recontoruing of your gum line for a more attractive smile, schedule a consultation with me. I’d like to introduce you to Periolase laser dentistry and answer all of your questions. Just call 972-934-1400 to reserve a convenient appointment in my Dallas dental office.

America Before Columbus

10/09/10 | Categories: Community Events

Just in time for Columbus Day a commedia-like trope humorously and skillfully enacts various scenes in A*B* C American Before Columbus.

The play begins with two children stepping across the frozen Bering Strait 20,000 years ago. We see the first Americans learn to survive, to hunt, to fish, to farm, to continue to progress until that day in 1492 when those strange sails appeared on the horizon. An outline of American pre-history, it is full of humor and action to keep young audiences entertained.

The play runs  from October 14th – 16th at The McKinney Center for Performing Arts, in downtown McKinney.

Ladies, Reduce Your Heart Attack Risk by 33%. Just Visit the Dentist!

10/06/10 | Categories: Gum Disease, Periolase

New research by University of California at Berkley tells us that women who regularly visit the dentist are one-third less likely to have a heart attack or stroke.

When you think about your mouth as a portal to your body, and consider that 600 bacteria are in your mouth at any given time, it’s easy to see how oral health can influence overall health. We know that gum disease increases the risk for heart attack, stroke, diabetes complications, Alzheimer’s disease, and other overall health problems in men and women. Some experts believe that bacteria from gum disease get into the bloodstream, attach to fatty plaques, and contribute to clot formation. Others think that inflammation caused by gum disease leads to coronary plaque buildup and, ultimately, swelling of arterial walls. We may not know exactly why oral health and cardiac health are linked, but we are certain that they are connected.

So you can reduce your risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and other serious health problems by visiting your dentist for checkups and cleanings every six months. At Lynn Dental Care, in both our Dallas and Highland Park offices, our team of hygienists work closely with patients to deter and correct dental disease.

Eighty percent of Americans have some form of gum disease. I’m Dr. Brock Lynn, and I want to personally invite you to schedule a checkup and cleaning with my team. (See our new patient special.) At your visit, I’ll talk with you about your concerns, if you have any, then evaluate your gum health, as well as the health of your teeth, jaw joints, head, and neck – from a dental perspective.

If I find signs of gum disease, we can discuss treatment options, such as minimally invasive Periolase laser treatment. If you don’t have gum disease, my hygienist will answer all of your questions about daily oral homecare and recommend products to keep your mouth in tip-top shape.

How to Choose an Implant Dentist in Dallas

09/28/10 | Categories: Implant Dentistry

So you think you want implants. You’ve heard that they’ll change your life. No more embarrassing slipping dentures during dinner. No more worry about loose dentures when you’re speaking in public. Life will be great…if you choose the right implant dentist. So how’s a consumer, or patient, to know which implant dentist is best? In a city like Dallas, there are so many implant dentists to choose from.

I recommend, no matter where you live, you consider five key factors (besides financing and insurance). If your dentist checks out on all of these points, then you can eliminate your fear factor and schedule an appointment. On your part, though, you need to be honest and forthcoming with your dentist. If you’re scared or unsure that you want implants, tell the dentist. He or she should be able to provide you with the information you need to feel confident and comfortable with your decision to get dental implants.

The Qualifications Factor

  • Does the dentist provide dental implant surgery and restoration, or would you visit a periodontist’s or oral surgeon’s office for the surgery?
  • What continuing education or certifications does the dentist have placing and/or restoring dental implants?

The Experience Factor

  • How many dental implant cases has the dentist completed recently (in the last year)?
  • Can you contact one of his or her implant patients for a reference? Are testimonials available for your review?

The Reputation Factor

  • How long has the dentist worked in the area? Where was he or she before moving to Dallas?
  • On Google Places, HealthGrades, and other public review websites, what do people say about this dentist?

The Facility Factor

  • If the dentist offers implant surgery, does he or she have a surgical suite in the office?
  • Does the dentist offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, conscious sedation, or IV sedation for implant surgery?
  • Request a tour of the office, and think about how you feel. Are you comfortable in this place? Does everything look clean; is the team friendly; are the current patients happy?

The Likability Factor

  • Do you like the dentist? You don’t have to give a reason. Just go with your instinct. Only you know how you really feel.
  • Do you feel comfortable, safe, and welcome in the office?

I’m Dr. Brock Lynn, an implant dentist and board-certified periodontist with a dental office in the Dallas area. Before I became a dentist, my father was a dentist in Highland Park. I believe you’ll feel comfortable, confident, and welcome in either of my offices. In fact, I invite you to schedule an office tour and consultation with me. Let’s talk about your dental history, and what you want out of your dental implant experience. There’s no obligation tied to a consultation. It’ll just be you and me getting to know one another. Come on in, and let’s see what we can do to give you the service and smile you deserve.

Beating the Daily Grind: TMJ Therapy in Dallas and Highland Park

09/22/10 | Categories: TMJ Headache Treatment

Constant friction on metal gears causes them to wear down, crack, and break. The same physics occur in our mouths. While tooth enamel is the strongest substance in the human body, daily clenching and grinding of teeth can cause significant damage — and pain.

I’m Dr. Brock Lynn, a general dentist and Periodontist in Dallas. If you suffer from nagging headaches or migraines, recurring earaches, jaw pain, or aching teeth, you may be a bruxer — a person who grinds and clenches his teeth habitually. The pain you’re experiencing could stem from TMJ disorder.

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joints, the two joints that hold your jaw to your skull. Consistent bruxing can lead to TMJ disorder, a painful but treatable problem. When you grind your teeth, the muscles and nerves around your jaw joints become stressed. This causes moderate to excruciating pain in the head, neck, shoulders, mouth, jaws, and ears.

At your dental visit, I’ll examine your teeth for signs of wear and stress fractures caused by teeth grinding. I’ll also check your jaw joints for misalignment. While bruxism can cause TMJ disorder, the opposite is true. TMJ disorder can contribute to bruxism. Yes, it is a vicious cycle.

The good news is, modern TMJ therapy is non-invasive and often effective. If I determine that you have TMJ disorder or bruxism, I’ll recommend an oral appliance to wear while you sleep. (Most people grind their teeth at night.)

Many variations of the appliance are available, and I’ll choose the right one for your situation. A TMJ appliance will hold your jaws in proper position while you sleep so that your muscles and nerves can rest. Over time, jaw muscles may naturally reprogram to hold the jaw in proper position. Sometimes they don’t reprogram, in which case, the patient wears the TMJ or appliance indefinitely.

If you don’t yet have TMJ disorder, but you do grind your teeth, I’ll prescribe an oral appliance to eliminate grinding and clenching. It won’t reposition your jaw. This preventive measure will, however, stop you from grinding, preserve your teeth, and it could save you from developing TMJ disorder.

As for correcting the damage to worn or cracked teeth, once you no longer grind your teeth, I will provide restorative crowns as necessary.

Call Lynn Dental Care in Dallas to schedule an appointment. We serve patients of all ages from across the DFW metroplex. My team and I look forward to meeting you, listening to your issues, and helping you live a healthy, high-quality life.

Dallas Implant Dentistry

09/12/10 | Categories: Implant Dentistry

Loose, ill-fitting, wobbly dentures are frustrating. If you’re a denture patient and you want more reliable, solid retention of your prosthesis, I want to talk to you about dental implants. I’m Dr. Brock Lynn, a Dallas implant dentist, and many of my patients have found improved quality of life with implant-retained dentures.

Dental implants are small posts that replace missing teeth roots. One implant can replace a single tooth, or I can secure about four implants to retain a denture. Because implants are connected to the jaw, they provide a stable anchor for dentures. No adhesive or suction is required. The implants do all the work.

At Lynn Dentistry, I provide complete dental implant procedures. Case planning, the precision surgical procedure, denture design, and follow-up appointments are all available under one roof. This means you won’t have to see an oral surgeon or prosthodontist for implant placement. I have the training and experience to provide you with complete dental implant treatment. For optimal results, I use a digital optical scanner, iTero 3-D imaging, and platelet-rich plasma for prompt healing of the surgical site. This video explains our digital optical scanner:

If you’re missing one or more teeth, or if you’d like more stable dentures, I invite you to come in for a consultation. Call my LBJ office at 972-934-1400 to schedule your visit. I’ll answer all of your questions and help you decide if dental implants are the best option for you.

How Do You Take Your Teeth Whitening?

09/12/10 | Categories: Cosmetic Dentistry

You want whiter teeth. I can help. I’m Dr. Brock Lynn, a cosmetic and restorative dentist in Dallas.

You should consider your schedule, budget, and lifestyle when deciding on any cosmetic dental procedure. Here’s a brief explanation of my office’s teeth whitening options.

Zoom! Whitening: If you need immediate results for a special event, like a wedding or reunion, or if your time is very limited, one-hour Zoom! Whitening may be your best option. Zoom! uses a light-activated gel to lift stains from deep within the pores of tooth enamel so that we can literally wash them away. In a single visit, this system can brighten teeth up to 8 shades.

Professional Home Whitening: If you prefer to whiten your teeth over a few weeks’ time, or you are concerned about tooth sensitivity, I may recommend a prescription-strength home whitening kit. With this system, I’ll fabricate custom-fitted trays to hold a strong bleaching gel against your teeth. Wear the trays as directed, for an hour or two each evening. After about 14 days of treatment, you’ll see results that rival the results of Zoom! Keep your trays to touch-up your teeth as needed, and call my office to order more gel if you run low.

Whitening Pen: For patients who aren’t seeking amazingly dramatic results from whitening, our inexpensive whitening pen offers a practical and effective option. Simply paint your teeth with the pen before you go to bed, and the bleaching action will occur while you sleep.

Porcelain Veneers: If your teeth are permanently stained, and no bleaching system has delivered the bright, white teeth you really want, we should discuss porcelain veneers. These handcrafted, thin shells of high-quality dental porcelain are permanent restorations that fit onto front teeth. They look completely natural, and they never stain. In addition to whitening, veneers can alter the shape, alignment, and overall appearance of teeth.

The best way to decide which teeth whitening solution is best for you is in a cosmetic consultation. Call my LBJ office at 972-934-1400 to schedule your visit.

Invisalign: Clearly the Right Choice for Dallasites

09/12/10 | Categories: Invisalign Clear Braces

So you’re unhappy with the alignment of your teeth, but you don’t want to wear metal braces. As a cosmetic dentist, I understand the importance of maintaining a sophisticated, mature image. I’m Dr. Brock Lynn, and I have a cosmetic and restorative dental office in the Dallas area. I’ve helped many adults in your situation by providing clear, removable braces called Invisalign.

Here’s what one of our wonderful patients think about our Invisalign system:

“Don’t change a thing! I just completed 2 years and 8 months of Invisalign treatment and am extremely pleased with the results as well as the professionalism, kindness, and caring of the entire staff from front desk to technicians to Dr. Hodge. I love to come to the dentist because it is always a pleasant and uplifting experience. The services offered are outstanding and always timely. Thanks to all of you!”

I invite you to come in and talk with me about Invisalign. If we determine that Invisalign is right for you, we can begin treatment immediately. First, I’ll take digital images of your teeth. With special software, I’ll design a treatment plan and let you know about how long treatment should take. A certified Invisalign lab will then fabricate a series of clear acrylic aligners according to my specifications.

Wear your aligners as directed, but keep in mind, you can remove them when you clean your teeth, eat a meal, or for special occasions. You won’t need to visit me for uncomfortable adjustment appointments as you would if you had traditional braces, but I will ask that you come in periodically so that I can assess treatment progress.

Invisalign is a good option for older teens and image-conscious adults. You won’t have to endure metal wires and brackets, rubber bands, or a juvenile appearance during orthodontic treatment. Want to know more? Call my LBJ office at 972-934-1400 to schedule your visit. I look forward to meeting you and helping you develop a smile you’ll want to share with the world.

Technological Advances at Lynn Dental Care

09/12/10 | Categories: Dental Technology

The evolution of dentistry is truly amazing. I’m excited to offer a number of technological advances to my dental patients. The tools I employ make dental work more precise and safe, and they also improve patient comfort, reduce healing time, and help keep smiles healthy and strong. These days, people are keeping their natural teeth longer than ever before. I believe access to dental care, quality dental materials, and new technology play a significant role in this achievement.

Here are a few of the technologies I use at Lynn Dental Care:

iTero Cone Beam Radiography – digital impressions provide 3-D images that replace traditional dental impressions

Digital Optical Scanner – creates custom abutments for implants in our office

Digital Imaging Software – provides a preview of what a dental procedure can do for a smile’s appearance

Digital Radiography – digital X-rays require 80% less radiation and provide detailed images for immediate review with the patient

If you’re ready to experience technologically advanced dental care, schedule an appointment today. Call my LBJ office at 972-934-1400.

Sedation Dentistry in Dallas

09/12/10 | Categories: Sedation Dentistry

Do you postpone or avoid dental visits because they cause you stress and anxiety? Have bad experiences made you fearful of pain during dental procedures? You aren’t alone. About half of Americans don’t go to the dentist regularly, and many of these people feel just like you do. As a sedation dentist in Dallas, I can provide various levels of medication that will give you peace of mind and body, so you can receive the dental work you need.

Sedation dentistry may involve nitrous oxide, a gas inhaled through a mask; oral anti-anxiety medications, like halcyon or valium; or a combination of these medications. These types of sedation work very well in most cases. However, for more significant effects, I may recommend conscious intravenous (IV) sedation. Sometimes conscious IV sedation is called twilight sedation because the patient does not completely go to sleep, but enjoys a very relaxed and near-sleep state of consciousness.

Let’s talk about why you don’t like dental visits so that we can choose the right solution to help you overcome the problem. Whether it’s a sensitive gag reflex, an inability to numb with traditional anesthesia, physical discomfort in the dental chair, control issues, or general stress and fear, I can help – and I want to help. You deserve a healthy smile, so give me a call today. Call my LBJ office at 972-934-1400 to schedule your visit.

All Porcelain Crowns: Sensible & Chic

09/12/10 | Categories: Restorative Dentistry

In the past, people who had crowns no longer enjoyed an all-white smile. Crowns were made of metal, making them obviously different from natural dental porcelain. But dental materials have come a long way, baby! Today, we have high-quality, durable dental porcelain that looks like natural tooth enamel.

I prefer to place all-porcelain crowns on teeth that show when a person smiles. For teeth further back in the mouth, a more durable material is necessary, so I often use porcelain-fused-to-metal or zirconia crowns. All of these materials look natural.

Sometimes, on molars that do not show in a smile, I still use metal crowns for optimal durability on the teeth that must endure intense pressure during chewing. However, these teeth are far back in the mouth, so the metal crowns don’t compromise the appearance of the patient’s smile.

If you need a new crown or a replacement crown, or if you have a toothache and need me to diagnose the cause of the pain, call my Dallas dental office in LBJ to schedule an appointment. I look forward to restoring your oral health without compromising your all-white smile!

Restoring Smiles & Lives in Dallas

09/11/10 | Categories: Restorative Dentistry

Many times, patients don’t know the details of what’s wrong with their oral health, but they do know that they want strong, attractive teeth, comfortable oral function, and freedom from dental disease and halitosis (bad breath). As a restorative dentist, I find great personal joy in helping patients with complex dental needs to find renewed quality of life, self-confidence, and good health.

If you’re missing teeth, your existing dental work is breaking down, your gums are red and tender, or you have serious mouth pain, I want to see you as soon as possible. Don’t postpone your visit because oral health problems only worsen over time. About half of Americans don’t go to the dentist regularly, and many feel anxious, stressed, or scared about dental care. If you suffer with dental phobia, please let me know. I offer various forms of sedation dentistry that will give you peace of mind and body during dental procedures.

At your consultation, we’ll take digital X-rays and images of your mouth so that I can diagnose your condition. I’ll talk with you about the situation, show you the digital images, answer your questions, and let you watch our easy-to-understand patient education videos so that you can know your treatment options. You may need new crowns and fillings, dental implants, periodontal treatment, cosmetic procedures, or any number of treatments. Because my associate and I have experience and training in a wide array of dental procedures, most of our patients can complete a complex dental rehabilitation in the comfort of our office. Once you understand your options, we’ll talk about your goals, budget, schedule, then determine the best plan to restore your mouth to full health and comfort.

About 80% of Americans have some level of gum disease, but often, the early symptoms go unnoticed. Red, puffy, tender gums, or bleeding during brushing, can indicate gum disease. Left undetected and untreated, the condition will rapidly accelerate.

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, increases a person’s potential for stroke, heart attack, low-weight births, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, diabetes complications, and other overall health problems. Gum disease is also the primary cause of tooth loss for American adults. I’m Dr. Brock Lynn, a certified Periolase dentist in Dallas. If you have gum disease, I’d like to talk with you about a non surgical, no-cut, no-sew treatment option that has proven highly effective.
